Namibia
What can you expect as a traveler in Namibia and what should you look out for? We give you all the information you need to plan your trip.
Best time to travel
That's actually not so easy to answer. Not only does it depend on the region, but also on what you want to do in Namibia. Generally, there is a dry season, which lasts from May to October, and a rainy season from January to April.
If you want to see the so-called Big Five (buffalo, elephant, leopard, lion and rhino) on safari, you should be in Namibia during the dry season. The chance of seeing a buffalo having a refreshing drink at a waterhole is much higher then. Other outdoor activities such as hiking and camping are also more enjoyable during the cooler months from May to September.
If you want to take home beautiful vacation photos full of lush green savannahs, you are better off during the rainy season. Only then the country really blossoms and especially the countless national parks show their best side.
CAUTION: Certain areas will flood during this time and some roads may be impassable due to mud.
Vacation planning: Are vaccinations necessary, do I need a visa, what else do I need to pack?
At the moment there are no mandatory vaccinations for direct entry from Germany to Namibia. However, always keep yourself up to date with the help of the Robert Koch Institute, because this can always change. All standard vaccinations should nevertheless be up to date.
As a German, you do not need a visa for a vacation (less than 90 days per year). Instead, you will be issued a free entry stamp (Visitors Entry Permit) upon arrival at all official border crossings.
What you should definitely take with you:
- Passport + copy + your other travel documents
(insurances!) - Adapter for sockets
- Sunscreen
- Insect screen
- Cash (Namibia Dollar) + Credit Card

For historical reasons, the Namibian capital is home to a mixture of different people. From indigenous peoples to Africans to Germans and other European settlers - Windhoek is a cultural melting pot.

Is Windhoek dangerous?
Those who spend their vacations in Windhoek should be attentive and take some precautions. Although there is no immediate danger, tourists are sometimes victims of theft or even robbery. Therefore, travelers should especially refrain from walking in the outskirts of the city and generally be careful - also when using credit cards, because credit card fraud is not uncommon, especially among tourists.
