In the Netherlands, up to 30,000 spectators follow the big cyclocross races live on site. There, cyclocross is a spectacle with the character of a folk festival. The short circuit of just under three kilometers is marked out on a relatively small area, and the spectators are always right in the middle of it, while the riders repeatedly pass or run by, or even carry the cyclo-crosser up hills or stairs with their shoulders.
